Anti-Semitism U.S. Navy

Byline:

The following entries are posted for those who may have a passing interest in some military history. I was doing some informal research on the late Admiral H.G. Rickover, who oversaw the USN nuclear power program from the 1940s until his retirement in 1982. As the junior yeoman (clerk) on a submarine in the 1970s, I prepared a lot of correspondence addressed to the Admiral, so I had more than just a passing interest. You will have to scroll down a few entries and read them backwards to follow the narrative. I discovered through reading Rickover's 1922 graduation biography, that he was subtily singled out as being Jewish, while another midshipman was singled out in a not-so-subtile way.

Another view of the perforated page in the 1922 USNA Lucky Bag yearbook. The fictitious "P. A. List" is next to Kaplan. This copy of the Lucky Bag was purchased off Ebay, but it was in such poor condition that I photographed these pages and then resold it to someone who can see to it's preservation better than I am able.

This is the ficititious listing next to that of Leonard Kaplan on the "perforated page" in the 1922 Lucky Bag yearbook of the US Naval Academy. I recenly purchased the badly worn volume (ebay) to do some research on Admiral Rickover. There are stories circulating on the internet and elsewhere that Rickover's page in the 1922 Lucky Bag was perforated because he was Jewish. Here I submit proof that it was Kaplan's page, not Rickover's, that was. However, while anti-semitism was overt with Kaplan, it was veiled but present on Rickover's as you can see.

The infamous 1922 USNA "Lucky Bag" perforated page. Jewish midshipman Kaplan is pictured here with his bio. Right next to it is the cartoon character whose fictitous bio is an attack on Kaplan.

Admiral Rickover was the father of the Nuclear Navy, in which I had the honor of serving in the late 1970s. Rickover was singled out for being Jewish in his 1922 US Naval Academy yearbook. The first lines of TLH hymn 495 are quoted in his graduation bio, as a veiled reference to his religion. His Jewish classmate, Leonard Kaplin was singled out with a perforated page and the cartoon character beside him.

All the pictures my father took during his time in the European Theatre had to pass an Army censor, as you can see here. I am thankful Dad preserved these pictures.
